Vantage Point October 2009

Welcome to the October edition of Vantage Point, your newsletter from Vantage IT Solutions.

We’re getting bigger!  It’s not the extra doughnuts we’ve been eating, it’s Simon, our new man on the support desk.  You may already have spoken to Simon and found out what a great, helpful chap he is.  If you haven’t, why not give him a call some time, I’m sure he’d be happy to hear from you!

We know you’ve been on the edge of your seat waiting for the release of Windows 7, the new operating system from Microsoft! Well, the wait is over so please read on to find out more.

Windows 7 - The World Holds its Breath

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Windows 7 Less than 3 years ago Microsoft released Vista on an unsuspecting public.  We were not keen and many businesses were reluctant to adopt it.  Microsoft has listened to some of the criticisms and on 22nd October released Windows 7.

Although Microsoft does not want Windows 7 to be viewed as a Service Pack 3 for Vista, this is probably a good description.  It is based on Vista and shares the same underpinnings, but many of the annoyances have been removed.  Out of the box it, like Vista, is too graphical for some, but it is sufficiently flexible that it can be tweaked to improve its usability.

There are some useful features that improve ease of use and there are various elements of security that are much-improved.  PCs bought over the last year or so should be able to run Windows 7, provided memory is at the very minimum 2GB.

Overall, we are more confident that Windows 7 is an operating system that we could recommend.  As it is more of a Service Pack, the compatibility problems from which Vista suffered should be less with Windows 7, but we would still suggest letting others find the problems first and wait a while before moving over.

Please contact us if you want more information on Windows 7 and to find out whether it is suitable for you.

Do you want us to dispose of your old IT?

It's done its best, but now it's time to go. What do you do when you want to throw away old IT equipment?  Vantage IT sends computers to a charity for use in developing countries, changing the lives of many people.  But sometimes the equipment can be too old to be of use.  It can then be problematic to dispose of because data on hard drives has to be destroyed and sometimes WEEE certificates need to be obtained.  Everyone wants to do their bit to help recycling efforts and now you can, with no hassle.

If you need to dispose of IT equipment, we can arrange its collection, recycling and disposal.  Hard drives will be securely wiped, or destroyed.  If WEEE certificates are required, these can be provided too.

To find out more about disposing of your old equipment, please contact us.

Spam Upgrade

If you use the Vantage IT Anti-Spam Service, you will have recently benefitted from a number of enhancements, both in the additional virus scanning it now employs and the increased speed of the service.  In addition, a brand new user interface developed in-house is now available.  This is much faster, both in the display of quarantined spam, plus when searching for mail.

If you don’t currently use our Anti-Spam Service, please contact us for more details.  The impact it has on the amount of spam is immediate and very impressive, plus existing address books can be imported to develop a preset whitelist of trusted senders and it is always learning to improve accuracy.
