People sometimes have problems with aching muscles or even suffer soft tissue damage, yet have no idea what caused it. It could be that the cause of an injury seems obvious, but it never gets better. The reason for both these scenarios could be the same, i.e. the way the computer is used.
Just take a look around your office at the way people sit at their desks and think about how you sit. Is your seat accurately adjusted? Are your keyboard, mouse and monitor properly positioned? Are you slouching in your seat? We all do it!
We know from experience that muscular problems can last a long time. We had a member of staff who quite literally had a ‘pain in the neck’ that wasn’t improving until a physiotherapist pointed out they weren’t sitting at their computer correctly.
This is simple advice that is easy to implement, but it can have a big impact on your body. The Health and Safety Executive produces a leaflet called ‘Working with VDUs’ that can be downloaded here. The whole document is an interesting read, but pages 12-14 cover correct posture.
There is a wide range of computer-related ergonomic devices available that can help alleviate aches and pains. From wrist rests, monitor stands and feet supports, to specially designed keyboards and trackballs, there is a device available for every occasion! Please contact Vantage IT for further details.
