If you find you often click on menus to use commands in programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook, access to them can be improved by adding the commands to one of the toolbars.
The procedure for adding commands to toolbars is the same for all Office applications. In the following example, the ‘Page Setup’ command in Word’s ‘File’ menu will be added:
Right-click anywhere on one of the toolbars and select Customize.
Click the Commands tab.
In the Customize window, select from the left hand column (Categories) the menu in which the command you want to add is located. In our example, ‘Page Setup’ is in the ‘File’ menu.
In the right-hand column (Commands), locate the command to be added. Left-click it once then, with the left mouse button still depressed, drag the cursor to the toolbar. As you move the cursor, it changes to a grey rectangle and cross.
With the cursor on the toolbar, the cross will change to a plus and an insertion marker will be displayed. Move the insertion marker to the desired position and release the mouse button.
Repeat steps (3) to (5) for any other commands you would like to add.
When finished, click Close and the Customize window will disappear.
If you want to move or remove a button:
Right-click anywhere on one of the toolbars and select Customize.
To move one of the buttons already on the toolbars, left-click the button and, with the left mouse button still depressed, drag the insertion marker to the button's new location.
To remove the button, left-click the button and, with the left mouse button still depressed, drag the button away from the toolbar. When the cursor changes to a grey rectangle and cross, release the mouse button.
When finished, click Close and the Customize window will disappear.
If you want to change a button or add text:
Right-click anywhere on one of the toolbars and select Customize.
Right-click the button to be amended and, from here, you can add text, replace a button image with another, or even edit an existing one.
If a button’s function is not obvious and you want to add a label, select Image and Text
From here you can really mangle the toolbar’s buttons, so you may want to use the features sparingly.
If you would like to reset the button to the default image, right-click it and select Reset. Right-clicking and selecting Default Style will reset the button’s text annotation.
When you have finished your amendments, click Close and the Customize window will disappear.
