With more businesses than ever recognising the need for remote communications (for example to provide sales staff with remote access to order processing systems) and with IT security becoming ever more prominent, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are becoming an essential part of business IT communications.
A Virtual Private Network is a secure, encrypted link (called a tunnel) that uses the Internet to connect a remote computer or computers (e.g. a user at home, or a branch office) to the head office network. As the Internet is open to all, normal communications over it are insecure. A VPN secures the communication when it leaves the remote computer and a device on the office network un-encrypts the communication on its arrival.
The Internet connection speeds at both ends of the VPN determine how useful it can be. For example, a mobile 3G connection is suitable for some applications, whereas the speed of broadband can give the appearance to the user of the computer being physically plugged into the office network. By simply using a traditional 56k dialup connection to the Internet, the user has the ability to retrieve and send emails wherever there is an analogue phone line.
Vantage can configure, supply and support the most suitable VPN for your business; a service it provides to a number of customers, for single users and branch offices, both in the UK and overseas.
